Ladakh Uncharted: Umling La, Tso Moriri & Turtuk
The ultimate Srinagar to Manali bike trip through Ladakh's rarest treasures
Overview
Embark on the most comprehensive Leh Ladakh bike trip โ a 2,200 km odyssey from the lush valleys of Srinagar through Ladakh's greatest treasures to the adventure capital of Manali. Conquer Umling La (5,790m), the world's highest motorable pass; camp beside the iridescent Tso Moriri; ride to Turtuk, India's northernmost village on the Pakistan border; traverse the dramatic landscapes of Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and the fabled Manali-Leh Highway. With an experienced Trip Captain leading the way, a 4x4 backup vehicle, bikes on rent with riding gears, and a dedicated support team, this 12-day expedition covers every corner of Ladakh that a motorcyclist dreams of.
Itinerary
Arrival in Srinagar | Shikara & Preparation
Arrive in Srinagar and check into your hotel. Take an afternoon Shikara ride on the iconic Dal Lake, exploring floating gardens and ornate houseboats. In the evening, attend a comprehensive briefing with your expedition leader covering the route, altitude protocol, riding formations, and safety procedures. Complete bike allocation, document verification, and gear check. End the day with a traditional Kashmiri Wazwan welcome dinner.
Srinagar to Kargil | Zoji La & Dras
The expedition begins with one of Ladakh's most dramatic gateways โ Zoji La (3,528m). The climb from Sonamarg through the stark, rocky pass offers breathtaking views of the Kashmir Valley receding behind. Descend into the Dras Valley and visit the Kargil War Memorial to pay respects. The landscape transforms from lush green Kashmir to barren Ladakhi mountains by the time you reach Kargil, an important town on the Srinagar-Leh Highway.
Kargil to Leh | Lamayuru & Moonland
Continue on the Srinagar-Leh Highway through spectacular terrain. Stop at the ancient Lamayuru Monastery โ one of Ladakh's oldest โ perched dramatically amidst a surreal 'Moonland' landscape of eroded sedimentary formations. Ride past the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers at Nimmu and the imposing Gurudwara Pathar Sahib. Arrive in Leh by afternoon with time to explore its charming streets and cafรฉs.
Leh | Acclimatisation & Monastery Tour
A crucial acclimatisation day before tackling the high passes. Visit Thiksey Monastery, the 'Mini Potala of Ladakh', with its 15-metre Maitreya Buddha statue. Explore Shey Palace and the 3 Idiots school (Druk Padma Karpo). Spend the afternoon at Shanti Stupa for panoramic views of Leh, and shop at the bustling Leh Market. Get your bikes fully serviced for the demanding days ahead.
Leh to Nubra Valley | Khardung La
Ride up to Khardung La (5,359m) โ one of the world's highest motorable passes. The sense of achievement at the summit is unforgettable. Descend the dramatic switchbacks into the lush Nubra Valley with its poplar-lined roads and vast sand dunes. Visit Diskit Monastery and its towering 32-metre Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Take an optional Bactrian camel ride on the Hunder sand dunes at sunset.
Nubra Valley to Turtuk | The Northern Frontier
Ride further north into one of Ladakh's most remote regions. This is a relatively unexplored stretch that takes you to Turtuk, a Balti village that was under Pakistani administration until 1971. Turtuk feels like stepping into a different world โ with its apricot orchards, winding cobbled lanes, and unique Balti culture. Explore the village, interact with the warm locals, and savour fresh apricots (seasonal). This is the northernmost point of the expedition.
Turtuk to Leh | The Shyok River Trail
Bid farewell to Turtuk and begin the ride back along the Shyok River. This scenic back route offers a different perspective of the Nubra Valley with fewer tourists and stunning river crossings. Pass through Khardung village and ascend back over Khardung La. Arrive in Leh by evening with a deep sense of having explored Ladakh's true frontier.
Leh to Hanle | Umling La โ The World's Highest Pass
Begin early for the most prestigious segment of the expedition. Ride through the Changthang plateau towards Hanle. Visit the Hanle Observatory โ one of the world's highest astronomical observatories. Then tackle the crown jewel: Umling La (5,790m), the highest motorable pass in the world! The road, built by the BRO, is an engineering marvel. The thin air, vast openness, and the knowledge that you're standing at the highest drivable point on Earth make this an experience of a lifetime. Return to Hanle for the night under some of the clearest skies on the planet.
Hanle to Tso Moriri | The Blue Lake
Ride through the vast Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, keeping an eye out for kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and the rare black-necked crane. Arrive at Tso Moriri, Ladakh's largest high-altitude lake at 4,522m. Less touristed than Pangong, Tso Moriri offers an untouched, serene beauty with its deep blue waters, snow-capped backdrop, and the charming Korzok village on its shore. Camp beside the lake and watch the stars emerge in the pristine high-altitude night.
Tso Moriri to Sarchu | The Changthang Crossing
Cross the vast Changthang plateau and rejoin the Manali-Leh Highway. Ride past the stunning Tso Kar โ a salt lake that mirrors the sky โ and through the More Plains, a surreal 40 km stretch of dead-straight tarmac at over 4,800m. Navigate the 22 hairpin bends of the Gata Loops and arrive at Sarchu, the high-altitude camping ground on the Himachal-Ladakh border. A campfire under the Milky Way caps an epic day of riding.
Sarchu to Manali | Baralacha La & Rohtang La
The final riding day crosses the mighty Baralacha La (4,890m), where three mountain ranges converge. Pass through Keylong and the green Lahaul Valley with the Chandra River for company. Cross Rohtang La (3,978m) and descend into the cedar forests of Manali. The contrast from Ladakh's stark moonscape to Manali's lush greenery provides a fitting finale. Check into your hotel and celebrate the completion of this monumental expedition with the group.
Departure from Manali
After a well-earned breakfast, the expedition officially concludes. Transfer to Manali bus stand or Bhuntar Airport for your onward journey. You leave with a lifetime of memories โ of the world's highest roads, of ancient villages on the edge of India, of lakes bluer than any photograph can capture, and of a motorcycle adventure that few have the privilege to experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
How difficult is Umling La compared to Khardung La?+
Umling La at 5,790m is significantly higher than Khardung La (5,359m), making it objectively more challenging in terms of altitude. The thin air at this elevation can cause breathlessness even during minimal exertion. However, the road surface to Umling La, being relatively new (built by BRO in recent years), is actually in good condition. Khardung La tends to have more tourist traffic and rougher patches. The key challenge at Umling La is the altitude itself โ our itinerary includes an overnight stay at Hanle (4,500m) the night before, which helps with acclimatisation. Our expedition team carries supplemental oxygen and monitors every rider's oxygen saturation levels regularly.
Do I need special permits for Umling La, Turtuk, and Hanle?+
Yes. The Umling La-Hanle region and Turtuk both require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian citizens, which we arrange for all participants. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for the entire Ladakh region, which is also arranged by us. Our packages include all permit processing fees for Hanle, Umling La, Turtuk, and all border areas covered in the itinerary. You need to provide passport-sized photos and a copy of your ID proof at the time of booking for permit processing.
What makes this 12-day route more comprehensive than the standard Manali-Leh trip?+
The standard Manali-Leh Highway (tour-001) is a 10-day expedition covering the classic route. This 12-day Srinagar-to-Manali expedition adds several exclusive elements: the stunning Srinagar-Leh Highway (widely considered more scenic than the Manali side), the remote Balti village of Turtuk at India's northern frontier, the world's highest pass at Umling La (5,790m), the serene and less-touristed Tso Moriri, and the complete Changthang plateau crossing. It's effectively two legendary routes (Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh) combined into one grand expedition with the additional bucket-list destinations that most Ladakh tours miss. If you have the time, this is the definitive 'do-it-all' Ladakh motorcycle experience.
What is the fitness level required for this expedition?+
This is rated 'extreme' for a reason. You need solid motorcycle riding skills โ at least 2 years of experience riding 200cc+ motorcycles on mountain roads. The expedition covers 1,400 km over 12 days, with riding days averaging 6-8 hours. You'll encounter broken tarmac, gravel, water crossings, and high-altitude passes. Physical fitness is crucial: you should be able to handle long riding days, pick up a fallen motorcycle (unlikely but possible), and cope with altitude. We recommend a fitness routine focused on cardio endurance and core strength at least 6 weeks before departure. Mental resilience is equally important โ the remote stretches through Changthang can be isolating, but that's also where the magic lies.
